LG touch screens are nothing new. A successful LG touch screen on Android, is something we have yet to see. Does the LG Optimus One have what it takes?

The Optimus one is an improvement on the previous Optimus GT540 as it is both cheaper and offers a newer version of the Android operating system. Specifications wise however it is more of the same, with both models offering a 3.2 inch display, and 3 megapixel camera, which is hardly anything worth writing home about.

Nevertheless, the selling point of the Optimus One is definitely its affordability; available for around £200 sim free, or free with a £20 a month contract. For an entry level device though, it is packed full of smart phone features, all thanks to running on Android. Whether it is access to a number of email accounts that you might have, or if you’re simply lost and need to boot up Google maps; which come with advanced features such as layering and ‘My Maps’, the Optimus one can do it. Also take into consideration the release of plenty of good apps on the Android Market and you have an entry level smart phone that can cater to most of your daily needs.

However, with all the cheap and cheery fun the phone has to offer, there are some drawbacks. The biggest of which, would have to be the low resolution screen. Although Android does web browsing well, it is tarnished by the low resolution screen the Optimus One offers, which makes reading text when viewing a web page, difficult. This low resolution also prevents the phone from supporting Flash Player.

Aesthetically the phone is bland, and LG’s user interface can look clumsy, especially in comparison to other devices on the market. If you can look past this though, you definitely have a cheap and powerful smart phone in your hands, that is ideal for users new to either Android or Smart phones.

The HTC ChaCha has been eagerly anticipated ever since it was first announced. It has been dubbed the ‘Facebook Phone’, as it promises to deliver an unparalleled experience when accessing the prolific social networking website.

The phone has received approval from Facebook’s head honcho, Mark Zuckerberg, who recently gave a talk about HTC’s new offering at the launch of the phone. Facebook is one of the first things that anybody who picks up the new handset will notice, given the fact that there is a big blue ‘f’ button at the bottom of the device.

The HTC ChaCha carries the latest iteration of Android (Gingerbread 2.3.3), and features one of the best looking QWERTY keyboards released to date – HTC are undoubtedly attempting to give their rivals RIM and their Blackberry series a run for their money. There is also a slight angle to the body of the ChaCha, which harks back to the “chin” of other HTC handsets; despite this, one of the best things about this feature is the fact that users are able to thump away at the handset’s keyboard whilst also easily viewing what’s going on on its screen at the same time.

The HTC ChaCha features a 480×320 2.6-inch screen; it offers a pixel density of 221ppi, meaning that the device is capable of offering some fairly impressive images for its size. It offers crisp, refined graphics and is more than capable of rendering fine detail in a sharp manner.

The handset’s homepage can be filled with the usual widgets that are available on HTC’s Sense, however, everything has been miniaturised which enables it to be much more efficient with its use of space.

All in all, the HTC ChaCha is undoubtedly going to impress fans of Facebook; and it has enough functionality and personality of its own to give it some appeal to those who want a funkier alternative to a Blackberry. This phone can be found at any orange shop or online right now!

Mobile phone technology has, over the last few years, been accelerating at an incredible rate. He have seen huge leaps forward just in the last two or three years, not least from companies such as Apple, who’s iPhone has introduced great hardware and software into the market, and companies such as Sony Ericsson and Nokia who have created some of the most innovative cameras and media software out there. One of the most eagerly anticipated handsets that is to come out soon however is from the American giants Motorola and this phone is the Atrix. The Atrix has a dual core processor, one of the first Android phones, and indeed mobiles to boast such technology and this should mean impressive multi tasking but in terms of advancements from this phone, it that there is another that eclipses even this.

The Atrix is the only phone that will feature the new Webtop software. This amazingly allows you to attach your phone to a kkeyboard and multimedia dock so you can effectively use your mobile phones as a netbook. This is an indication of just how powerful smart phones are becoming, surpassing processing speeds that would have not been achievable on computers just a few years back. Once you have plugged your phone in you are away, not having to deal with any annoying installation or driver set up and you can play around so much more with this phone, in this mode than you can with just a normal smart phone.

The phone also has other great technological advances such as biometric finger print scanning so that you can add extra security that, of course only you can bypass! Pretty futuristic stuff! The phone also has a 5 megapixel camera which is as good as most other smart phones and has an impressive amount of memory, boasting 16GB internal storage upgradeable with 32GB microSD cards. Mobile phones are available to buy online from dialaphone who offer contracts from a range of the most popular mobile phone suppliers.

All fans of the massively popular LG Cookie will be rather pleased to hear that its successor, the eagerly anticipated LG Cookie Fresh, will soon be hitting the UK shops.

I love the sound of the LG Cookie Fresh, the name itself just conjures up images of freshly baked cookies, but technically speaking it’s also looking pretty good.

The new mobile phone from LG will feature social networking capabilities, a dedicated Facebook interface, LiveSquare, an updated speed dialling feature adapted from the LG Cookie, a 2 megapixel camera, MP3 player, MPEG 4 video and a 3.2mm jack port.

So far Vodafone, Phones 4u, Virgin and Tesco have all confirmed that they will be carrying the LG Cookie Fresh, which has been widely anticipated especially since the LG Cookie was a big seller last year. Like its predecessor it will offer a full touchscreen handset at a low cost, which is one of the reasons the Cookie was so popular in the first place.

The LG Cookie will also be available in a variety of colours which is bound to appeal to those who are wanting a little bit of individuality in what is going to become a fast selling mobile phone.

There’s still no official release date for the handset but it is rumoured to be arriving on our shelves very soon so keep your eyes peeled for more information!

All you UK Android fans will no doubt be highly anticipating the release of Google’s flagship mobile phone, the Nexus One, which will be rolled out across Vodafone stores from tomorrow, 30th April.

Yes, that’s right folks the Google Nexus One will be available from tomorrow, and you can get it in Vodafone stores and online too – a big move from the online-only sales from Google direct that is the curse of the US at the moment.

Loads of you will have pre-ordered the phone in which case it should be shipped to you very shortly and you can take in its full spec for yourself. Just in case you’d forgotten what you are letting yourself in for, here’s the lowdown on the Nexus One spec:

3.7 inch AMOLED 480 x 800 WVGA display

Weight: 130g

Snapdragon 3G 1GHZ processor

5 Megapixel camera, including flash, autofocus and geotagging

1GB mobile data

Google Maps navigation

Memory expandable to 32GB

Advanced voice recognition software

Speculation on just how good this handset is has been rife after some initial problems with the US launch but no doubt the user reviews will be flooding the web soon, so we’ll just have to wait and see if this is a true rival to the massive selling iPhone. Let’s hope it’s as good as it sounds.

It was only a matter of time before the mobile network providers started introducing their own brand mobile phones to the market, and with Orange recently announcing their ‘Boston’ handset, Vodafone have quickly followed suit with their own Android phone, called the Vodafone 845.

Vodafone have supported the new Android technology and offer price plans on many of the new Android phones including the HTC Desire, Legend and Tattoo as well as the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and soon the Google Nexus One, so it’s not surprising that they have launched their first phone with the Android OS.

The Vodafone handset is not likely to compete with the Nexus One’s or iPhone’s on the market but is designed to be a practical and low cost handset that offers people access to the Android platform.

The phone will launch with the newest version of Android, 2.1 and there will be a wide range of applications available for the phone, either preloaded or downloadable. Users will be able to access the Android market for new apps (of which there are 30,000 and counting).

Hardware-wise the phone is fairly basic with a 2.8 inch 240 x 320 pixel display, 3.5G support, a 3.2 megapixel camera, built in GPS, Bluetooth, microSD memory slot and WiFi.

It’s expected to be a free handset for customers signing up for a contract, although no official pricing details have been released yet. The Vodafone 845 is rumoured to be available from Vodafone stores from next month.

Last week we revealed how a supposed prototype of the new iPhone 4G had been lost in a bar, found and somehow found its way into the hands of blog site Gizmodo, who picked it apart and revealed new features.

Now, it appears that the phone is genuine and was lost by Apple employee Gray Powell but now the blog site may well be in trouble after it emerged that they had bought the lost phone.

Californian police raided the home of blogger Jason Chen and seized computers, servers and an Apple iPad amongst other devices. Police are currently investigating whether or not Mr. Chen has broken the law by acquiring stolen property for personal benefit.

Gawker Media, who own and run the Gizmodo blog admitted that they had bought the iPhone prototype from a middleman who acquired it from the person who found the lost phone and sold it to the blog site for around $5,000.

The prototype was returned to Apple, once they had admitted it was theirs, but the whole mess left Apple bosses fuming after their new technology was revealed to the world, months ahead of schedule, when Apple are notorious for keeping their new designs under wraps.

Chen may be exempt from the legalities due to the face that he works as a journalist, and therefore has a right to protect his sources, but time will tell if this will stand as he works on a blog site.

Either way it’s not really good for Gizmodo, or for Apple, but no publicity is bad publicity and we suspect that the revelations of the new prototype will only create yet more anticipation for the new iPhone. Though we do wonder if Apple will remove some of the features, or add in new ones, just to make it different to the revealed prototype.

What a media mess!

Well Android fans, good news this week as Vodafone have finally announced the release date for the Nexus One mobile phone in the UK, so you will be able to get your hands on Google’s first handset from this Friday.

Google’s first phone will sell in Vodafone stores across the UK, as well as via their telesales and online stores, and for the first time worldwide Google will be selling the phone from somewhere other than its own online phone store google.com/phone.

The Nexus One will be launched with the Android OS, which is fast becoming hugely popular in the mobile phone world and is being touted as the first real rival to the Apple iPhone.

You will be able to get the Nexus One free from Vodafone for £35 a month over a 24 month contract, or £25 a month on an 18 month contract, but the handset for the latter will set you back £99.

A Google spokesperson has said: “We have decided that the best and fastest way to get Nexus One into the hands of European consumers is through our partners. Consumers in Europe will be able to buy Nexus one from mobile operators, beginning with Vodafone.”

The move to sell via the mobile operators could be a good move to boost sales as figures from the US suggest that sales of the Nexus One have not been able to match those of the Apple iPhone or the Motorola Droid (or Milestone in the UK), but this is largely attributed to only being available via Google’s online store.

The phone will be launched with 1GB data allowance, as well as a further 1GB to use via hotspots around the UK. The phone will also feature free satnav capability and multitouch web browsing.

Amid a storm of Dell phone leaks yesterday, the Dell Lightning emerged as the highlight of the Windows 7 operated handsets and it looks like this is one phone that will go down a treat.

News of the Dell leaks were picked up by Engadget who revealed that the stylish new phone will feature a portrait QWERTY slide-out keyboard, and will run on Windows Phone 7 OS.

The Dell lightening certainly packs a punch, and is the best out of the storm of leaks that also include the Dell Thunder and Dell Aero. Among its rather impressive spec list is a 1GHZ QSD8520 Snapdragon processor, a 4.1” OLED display, T-Mobile 3G, 5 Megapixel camera with autofocus capabilities, GPS, Wi-Fi, full Flash support (sorry iPhone users!) with video playback and 512MB RAM and 8GB of storage on a MicroSD card.

Not only that but it has also been hinted that the Dell Lightning will also be getting an upgrade to LTE 4G, so this is definitely a phone to be keeping an eye on.

The release date for the Dell Lightning has yet TBC but it is currently looking likely to be released in the last quarter of 2010, meaning that this will be one of the first handsets to be released with the next Microsoft OS pre-loaded onto it. No ideas on pricing, but expect it to hit you where it hurts as we doubt a phone with a spec like this will come cheap.

T-Mobile are offering their HTC Desire customers two free movies and launching a new movies-on-demand service for the Android phone that will be powered by Saffron Digital.

Warner Bros have already signed up for the service which is good news for movie fans. HTC Desire customers will be able to download two free movies in the first month and can choose from titles including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, The Hangover and Interview With The Vampire.

The movies can be watched via your PC or on your HTC mobile phone and you can watch them for 48 hours after download. The Video-On-Demand (VOD+) service will then start charging for downloads, with older movies being priced at £2.49 a film and £3.49 for newer films.

Nicola Shenton, the head of handset and device marketing at T-Mobile said: “We anticipate the Desire being one of our most popular handsets of 2010 and the VOD+ service makes it even greater value for our customers.”

It will be interesting to see how popular the service is but with newer titles gradually being added by the likes of Warner Bros it could well prove popular with film buffs who want new movies on the go.
