Mobile giant O2 have announced that they will only be selling the new iPhone 4 to existing customers for the first month, due to lack of handsets and high demand.

The iPhone 4 has been hotly anticipated for months and Apple’s newest mobile phone will finally be released on Thursday. Demand for the new handset was so high that some sites crashed because too many people were trying to pre-order the mobile phone.

Because of the exceedingly high demand O2 have announced that they will only be selling the new iPhone 4 to existing customers who are subscribed to their mobile broadband, home broadband or mobile phone services.

Bad news for non-O2 customers who signed up before May 24th then as existing customers will get priority and the remaining allocation will then be distributed.

An O2 spokesperson said: “We want to make sure that our existing customers get priority so until at least the end of July, only existing O2 customers will be able to get an iPhone 4 from us. Whether you’re an existing O2 mobile customer looking to upgrade, or one of our broadband customers looking to move your mobile to O2, our iPhone stock is reserved exclusively for you.”

If you want to get your hands on a fourth-generation iPhone however, then fret not as there are plenty of other providers who will be selling them – Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, Tesco Mobile and 3 have all signed up for the new handsets.

It seems like flirty texts are not just a pastime of the British – Aussie men are at it too, with 40% of women saying they have caught their partners engaging in flirty texts or emails, after becoming suspicious and checking their mobile phones.

According to the Telstra survey 40% of women surveyed admitted that they had snooped through a partners phone to check for saucy messages to other women.

It looks like a quarter of them had good reason to be suspicious too – as they found their partner had been ‘flirtexting’ (that’s flirty texting to you and me) with someone via text or emails on their phone.

It’s not just men though as 6.7% of women surveyed said that they had been caught out by their partners doing the exact same thing!

1, 250 people were surveyed for the study and some other interesting findings include: One in five people have accidently sent a flirty text to the wrong person, and more women than men are likely to engage in flirty texts with their partner.

In the 18-39 age group more than half the people who were surveyed said that they thought it was ok to ask someone out for the first time via a text message. Not exactly romantic…

Texting is also being used to end romance for some, with 14% of people surveyed in New South Wales having ended a relationship via the dreaded text message.

I wonder what the results would be for us Brits… I’d like to think they’d be slightly more positive but I have serious doubts!

Festival season is now upon us, with download already in progress, and with it comes a strange new development for festival going mobile phone users… You can use wellies to charge up your mobile!

Yes, it’s true – mobile phone giant Orange have revealed that they have developed Orange Power Wellies, which will charge up your mobile with the heat created while you dance away.

Orange are calling the inventive mobile phone charger “a groundbreaking and innovative eco mobile phone charging prototype created to keep Glastonbury Festival goers connected with their friends across the weekend.”

Of course, there’s always a downside to these things – the first being that it’s only a prototype, although it is being trialled at Glastonbury so you can test them out. The second is that to charge your mobile for an hour, you’ll need to dance around for 12 hours! However, the more you dance and the hotter your feet get, the more charge you will get.

The Orange power wellies apparently work by transferring the power in the power generating sole via thermocouples built into the wellies (it’s a bit more complex than that I’m sure – but you can check out the official press release for more details if you’re that way inclined).

Seeing as wellies are the footwear of choice for festival fans, this could actually be something that could catch on… if they actually end up releasing a product of course.

So, if you’re heading to Glastonbury and find yourself wondering why you can’t find your tent and have a dead mobile phone battery – better head to the Orange stand!

We’ve heard in recent weeks that iPhones make men more attractive to women and that under 25’s like to text during sex and now more news from the strange depths of the mobile phone industry – scientists have figured out why other people’s mobile phone conversations are annoying.

The journal Psychological Science claims that the reason we get so annoyed is because we can only hear half the conversation. It’s all in the way the mind works you see.

According to the study we get irritated by listening to one side of a conversation because we have less control at diverting our attention away from one side of a conversation than when we are listening to a complete one.

The study said: “Since halfalogues really are more distracting and you can’t tune them out, this could explain why people are irritated,” said Lauren Emberson, the co-author of the study.

Researchers based at Cornell University ran a sequence of tests designed to monitor people’s reactions to auditory stimuli, including complete silence, a monologue, a two-person conversation and a ‘halfalogue’ where you can only hear one side of the conversation.

Results showed that more mistakes were made during the tests when listening to the halflogue.

So there you go folks… not that it really matters, but next time you find yourself really annoyed by the person on the bus’s mobile chat just imagine the other persons responses and calm the angry monster inside!

Vodafone have announced that they will soon be carrying three more top smartphones; the Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Wave and the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini.

As far as phone retailers go Vodafone is doing a pretty good job of offering a good variety of the smartphone market to its customers, stocking everything from the iPhone, the Google Nexus One and the HTC Desire and now they are adding three more mobile phones to their collection too.

Of the three models I’d be most excited about the Samsung Wave; we’ve heard good things and it’ll be interesting to see how Samsung’s first model using their Bada OS will perform. It comes with a 3.3 inch Super AMOLED screen and a 1GHz processor.

The Bada platform promises to let users: “Adapt the phone to suit your requirements. Using the TouchWiz feature, for example, you can personalise multiple home screens with your favourite shortcuts and menus to get quicker access to the things you need most.”

The Samsung Galaxy S will be available exclusively to Vodafone customers and will be released with Android 2.1 as well as having a 4 inch super AMOLED screen, 5 megapixel camera and also features HD video capture.

The Sony Ericsson X10 mini is the another Android phone that will be carried by Vodafone and is aimed at social networking users and features Timescape and Mediascape applications to help you keep track of your busy social calendar as well as accessing lots of lovely music and video content.

All three phones are featured on their ‘coming soon’ page but there are no pricing details as of yet but hopefully there will be some good mobile phone deals available for those taking out a contract.

We’re all used to strict mobile phone usage rules at work and now it seems that the government are not excluded from this rule with new PM David Cameron banning the use of mobile phones and Blackberry’s during cabinet meetings.

The UK has been on tenterhooks in the past week as the Lib Dem’s negotiated with both Labour and the Conservatives to strike a deal and create a coalition government. Looks like Mr. Cameron is setting about laying some ground rules as he made the announcement yesterday that no mobile phones could be used during the meetings.

Justice Secretary Ken Clarke had to be called to attention at the beginning of the meeting as he was still engaged in another conversation on his mobile phone! Cameron told members that they were no longer allowed their mobile phones or Blackberry’s with them during meetings.

This isn’t the first time that the issue of mobile phones have been brought up in parliament; in 2008 Commons Speaker Michael Martin had to reject a plea from MP Greg Mulholland to fine members whose mobile phones rang during a meeting in the chamber.

The issue arose after an MP’s mobile phone rang twice during questions with the Culture Secretary Andy Burnham. However, the plea was rejected with Mr. Martin advising that he would be ‘powerless’ to impose the fines on fellow MP’s, even if the money was given to charity.

Surprisingly enough we’ve got a very relaxed attitude towards mobile phones in our workplace but I have no doubt that it could certainly cause a few issues within the government if a mobile phone were to start ringing in the middle of a debate!

With the world going slightly gaga for 3D at the moment it was only going to be a matter of time before technology caught up and started offering 3D devices at home so now not only can you get a 3D ready TV but you can also get a 3D ready camera on your mobile phone.

Sharp have announced that that they have created a tiny 720p 3D camera ready for use in mobile devices and is small enough to fit into a smartphone or a compact point and shoot camera. The new technology in the device will allow it to capture both moving images and high resolution 3D pictures.

The device makes use of complex technology such as colour synchronising processing, ‘fast readout’ and high density mounting technology to help it produce high resolution 3D images.

Sharp have announced that the cameras will be ready to go into mass produced devices from the end of 2011 and they’re expected to be found in mobile phones as well as the 3D screens for the eagerly anticipated Nintendo 3DS.

As well as the tiny 3D camera Sharp have also announced plans to produce a wider range of 3D ready devices during the rest of 2010.

For all of you cyclists out there planning your route to work on your Android mobile phone probably hasn’t been too simple so far, and no doubt you haven’t appreciated taking busy roads full of lorries and taxi drivers, but fear not because now Google Maps have become bike friendly!

Yes folks, if you’re running Android 1.6 or above then you should head to the Market and update your Google Maps as you will find that they are now much more bike friendly and there are a few other nifty features too.

As all you cyclists will know, not all roads are particularly friendly for bikes and if you’re tired of almost being flattened by lorries then try the new bicycle directions feature which will highlight any road with bike lanes in green as well as show you bike-only routes in a darker green colour.

As well as finding you a less stressful route to work Google Maps will also let you share your location by sending your location to any others via email, text or via third-party apps. Rather handy if you’ve gotten lost on a walk in the country and need to be rescued by your friends isn’t it?

There’s also the Google Navigation Shortcut feature which has now been moved from the depths of the menu onto an optional homescreen shortcut which will take you directly to the Navigation feature and now has one-click access to directions either by speaking or typing in your contact name, destination or recent destinations.

Apple seem to be having some difficulty holding onto their prototypes lately and after the whole Gizmodo incident last month, which saw an fourth-gen iPhone being sold to tech site Gizmodo who then picked it apart and showed the world the new design, it now seems another one has turned up this time in Vietnam.

Yes, it seems that yet another iPhone 4G prototype has found its way into the hands of Vietnamese site Taoviet, according to a report on Engadget, and although there is no operating system running (just the Bonfire test routine) there are still more noticeable changes from the unit that Gizmodo reported on last month.

The Vietnamese prototype appears to have lost the two screws that flanked the dock port at the bottom of the device, this prototype also has the 16GB capacity branded on the back of the phone so it is unsure at this point whether or not this prototype is further down the production line than the Gizmodo handset.

People will of course question whether or not it’s genuine but the pictures show that the unit has been picked apart and some new features that were seen on the previous prototype still remain here; the dual cameras still remain, as do a side mounted micro SIM slot, LED flash and some strange grooves that are etched into the metal casing around the phone. Oh, and there’s even an Apple logo thrown in for good measure.

No doubt we’ll find out soon enough, as I doubt Taoviet will keep quiet if Apple’s henchmen come knocking on the door asking oh-so-politely for it back.
