Sales of mobile phones using Google’s Android OS have overtaken those of Apple’s iPhone for the first ever time in the US according to new research figures.
Android mobile phones have quickly gained popularity in the mobile industry and have caused some much needed competition in a sector that was dominated by the iPhone and Blackberry.
The new research comes courtesy of NPD Group and shows that Blackberry hold 36% of the market, followed by Google’s Android with 28% and the iPhone at 21%.
There are several reasons why this may be the case, namely that there are only two models of the iPhone while there are several differing Android handsets, Android handsets are generally much cheaper that the iPhone and the majority of US carriers still don’t have the iPhone.
The whole of the mobile phone industry was shaken up by the release of the iPhone back in 2007 and sales have exceeded 50 million handsets and no doubt that sales will increase for Apple once the iPhone 4G goes on sale next month.
The NPD research is based on online customer surveys rather than corporate mobile phone sales.
