Festival season is now upon us, with download already in progress, and with it comes a strange new development for festival going mobile phone users… You can use wellies to charge up your mobile!

Yes, it’s true – mobile phone giant Orange have revealed that they have developed Orange Power Wellies, which will charge up your mobile with the heat created while you dance away.

Orange are calling the inventive mobile phone charger “a groundbreaking and innovative eco mobile phone charging prototype created to keep Glastonbury Festival goers connected with their friends across the weekend.”

Of course, there’s always a downside to these things – the first being that it’s only a prototype, although it is being trialled at Glastonbury so you can test them out. The second is that to charge your mobile for an hour, you’ll need to dance around for 12 hours! However, the more you dance and the hotter your feet get, the more charge you will get.

The Orange power wellies apparently work by transferring the power in the power generating sole via thermocouples built into the wellies (it’s a bit more complex than that I’m sure – but you can check out the official press release for more details if you’re that way inclined).

Seeing as wellies are the footwear of choice for festival fans, this could actually be something that could catch on… if they actually end up releasing a product of course.

So, if you’re heading to Glastonbury and find yourself wondering why you can’t find your tent and have a dead mobile phone battery – better head to the Orange stand!
