It’s been a while in the making but looks like Google Goggles can now translate the text in photos, rather handy we think, especially when trying to decipher a foreign menu.
Yes, you can now translate English, French, Italian, German and Spanish language text with Google Goggles v.1.1 for mobile phones with Android 1.6 and higher.
As far as apps go the Google Goggles format is pretty simple and features a point and shoot type action, where you can point and shoot at a word or phrase by drawing a box around your chosen snippet and taking a photo of it. The rather nifty app will then run through Google and if it is recognizes then you can select the translation button after defining you language and the language you wish it to be translated into.
Google have gone so far as to update the app with enhances photo recognition as well as barcode recognition, which will help in identifying things like logos and product.
There are endless applications for Google Goggles – found something and don’t know what it is? Run it through Goggles and see what it comes up with. On holiday and want to eat with the locals but can’t read the menu? Lost in a foreign country and want to figure out where you are? It might be hit and miss sometimes but that’s all part of the fun.
